There are five species of wild turkey targeted throughout the United States, and many hunters will tell you that turkey hunting adventures are some of the most heart-pumping, breathtaking moments in their memory banks. If you were on top of your game and remembered to submit your Wisconsin Spring Turkey Application by the deadline (December 10) and were lucky enough to draw a permit in your desired zone (there are seven zones), you should be looking at a fantastic spring in 2015. Early Ice / Walleye Strategies
By: Gary Parsons and Keith Kavajecz
It seems that most people’s idea of fishing “early ice” conjures up the image of the lone angler, trudging onto a remote frozen lake or pond to huddle over a couple holes chiseled in the ice as he waits quietly to catch a few fish for the evening meal. Now while that’s a nice and serene scene, in reality, modern ice anglers are about being efficient on the ice – covering water, finding fish and triggering more bites. Ice fishing today is much more like open water fishing than ever before. Continue Reading

Bay of Green Bay ice offers unique mid-winter opportunities for anglers
By Andy Mack
It’s time to break out the ice fishing gear and prepare for what should be a great ice fishing season!
While numerous inland lakes are already covered with a few inches of ice, my thoughts turn to ice fishing on the Bay of Green Bay. Part of my pre-season preparation includes deciding on what species to target and when. In recent times, whitefish have been all the rage on the bay. Especially in the northern parts of the bay. But other species like pike, walleye, perch and even smelt are available if you know where to look and when. Continue Reading
Public Land Deer Hunting
By: Jordan Marsh
It’s no secret that Wisconsin is a top tier and destination deer hunting state. Hunters from across the country venture to Wisconsin every fall to chase the elusive whitetails that fill the landscape. The Badger State has had plenty of Boone & Crocket and Pope & Young deer taken being that it’s one of the highest harvesting states of those records every season. The nine-day gun deer season is about as big of a tradition as the holidays. As the woods turn into blaze orange, businesses literally shut down, and the sight of seeing a hunter’s “trophy” in the back of the truck is just the daily norm. We are fortunate to live in a state with a good population of whitetails, but we are even more fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to access hundreds of thousands of acres of public land. Lake Sturgeon Hook and Line Angling Opportunities in Wisconsin
Article authored by multitude of WDNR biologists
By: Ryan Koenigs
Lake sturgeon are the largest and longest lived fish species in the Great Lakes drainage and were historically abundant throughout their native range of the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Hudson Bay drainages. However, overharvest, migration barriers, pollution, and habitat destruction have resulted in a significant decline in fish populations throughout their range and extirpation of many populations. Wisconsin is right in the heart of the lake sturgeon’s range and remains home to some of the species most successful management programs (http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/sturgeon/lakesturgeonidentification.html). In fact, Wisconsin boasts vibrant recreational hook and line fisheries and a spear fishery for lake sturgeon in many locations, while most populations in other states are protected from harvest to aid recovery programs. Canada Trip 2019
Another bucket list item was checked off my list earlier this month as I traveled to Stanley’s Resort in the west arm of Eagle Lake located in Ontario, Canada. Let me tell ya, everything you hear about Canada and the fishing, is 100% true! I had an absolute blast spending a full week on the water chasing walleye, northern, smallmouth and lake trout. To give it to you best, I will breakdown day by day my 10 day excursion and experiences along the way. Continue Reading
